As soon as I <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/supplements-for-helicobacter-pylori.html" target="_blank">treated</a> my <a href="http://h.pylori/" target="_blank">H.pylori</a>, my iron percent saturation shot up to 46% from 19%! But sadly it fell down just four weeks later to 20% when I stopped supplementing because 46% is too high (that's where a man's saturation should be and considered toxic for a woman). <br /><br />I was bummed. What is the <i>deal</i>? I've been trying to raise my iron for 14 months now! <br /><br />I started supplementing iron again and also started learning about the relationship between iron and my high copper levels. Here is what I've learned:</span></span></span></span></span></h5>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

not really poor iron levels. It is copper toxicity, and or

In fact, many physicians prescribe iron to patients who do not need it,
including most menstruating women who have copper toxicity and copper
biounavailability causing their anemia. This wastes their time and
leads to worsening iron overload problems in these young women." </span></span></span><a href="http://drlwilson.com/articles/IRON.htm" target="_blank">Dr. Lawrence Wilson</a></span></span></blockquote>

the single most important physiological reason for copper problems

production of ceruloplasmin, the primary copper-binding protein." <br /><br />I also read that "When adrenal activity is insufficient, ceruloplasmin synthesis in the
liver declines. Copper that is not bound cannot be used and unbound
copper begins to accumulate in various tissues and organs." This
makes sense because stress depletes zinc, which then raises copper. </span></span></span></span></span></span></h5>

As they say in the video below, B12 is a horse, not a zebra. In other words, B12 should be something our physicians routinely check. <br />
<br /><a href="http://youtu.be/BvEizypoyO0">http://youtu.be/BvEizypoyO0</a><br />
<b>Symptoms and Related Disorders</b><br />
Memory Issues, mental confusion, "brain fog," short attention span<br />
Nerve issues, Numbness, Tingling or "Pins and Needles" esp. in hands or feet, Gait problems, and urinary incontinence due to nerve damage<br />
Muscle Issues: Weakness, Clumsiness<br />
Pale or yellow skin<br />
<br />
Mood Issues: Anger, Irritability, Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Thoughts of Suicide, Psychosis <br />
Stomach and GI Disturbances, including food allergies<br />
Eating Disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia<br />
Sore mouth or tongue, including swollen tongue, possibly dark red<br />
Visual Disturbances<br />
Dizziness <br />
Orthostatic Intolerances<br />
Tachycardia<br />
Edema<br />
Elevated Homocysteine<br />
Elevated MMA<br />
Shortness of Breath<br />
Migraines<br />
Fatigue<br />
Tremors <br />
Dysplagia, including <i>epithelial dysplagia </i>which can result in a false positive pap smear for women<br />
Neurological lesions<br />
In children, repetitive gestures, possible regression in developmental areas, small head circumference, slow growth, failure to thrive, <br />
<b><br />Risk Factors include:</b><br />
A diet low in meat and animal protein, esp. vegetarian or vegan<br />
Celiac Disease<br />
Use of acid-blockers (see <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/stomach-acid/" target="_blank">here</a>, if you have stomach acid issues) <br />
Use of Birth Control<br />
Use of Nitrous Oxide anesthesia (<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" data-reactid=".r[2ayhg].[2]{comment301088370026444_1323727}.[2:0].[5:0:right].[4:1].[5:0:left].[2:1].[2:0].[2:0:2]"><span data-reactid=".r[2ayhg].[2]{comment301088370026444_1323727}.[2:0].[5:0:right].[4:1].[5:0:left].[2:1].[2:0].[2:0:2].[3:0]"><span data-reactid=".r[2ayhg].[2]{comment301088370026444_1323727}.[2:0].[5:0:right].[4:1].[5:0:left].[2:1].[2:0].[2:0:2].[3:0].[4:0:0]">which inactivates B12)</span></span></span><br />
Stomach Surgery<br />
Pregnant and post-partum women (increases B12 needs), especially those women taking supplements high in folic acid - particularly women with post-partum depression<br />
<br />
Those with low stomach acid (esp. the elderly)<br />
Age over 50<br />
Parasites<br />
Pernicious Anemia<br />
Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth<br />
Peptic Ulcer<br />
Transcobalamin Deficiency<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Serum B12 labs are not always enough to rule out a deficiency because the lab is checking serum levels, not tissue levels of B12. The video explains that the following <b>labs</b> might need to be done to rule out a B12 deficiency:<br />
<ul>
<li>Serum B12</li>
<li>HoloTranscobalamin</li>
<li>Homocysteine</li>
<li>Methylmalonic Acid</li>
<li>Unsaturated B12 Binding Capacity</li>
</ul>

At sample 1) just above the top of the bottom quarter of the range TO being just below the top quarter of the range.<br />At sample 2) in the top quarter of the range TO just barely under mid-range.<br />At sample 3) in the bottom quarter of the range TO the top of the bottom quarter of the range.<br />
At sample 4) in the bottom quarter of the range TO perfectly at the very bottom of the range.<br />I did <span class="il">cortisol</span> saliva tests in March, May and October 2012, then in February 2013. </span><br />
<div>
<div style="overflow: hidden;">
My first <span class="il">cortisol</span> saliva test in March 2012 was before starting CT3M at the end of March. <br />
<br /><b>3/2012</b><br />
AM 18.2 (2.4-33.7) This result was about mid-range, which is 18.05<br />
Noon
6.9 (1.2 - 17.8) This result is in the 3rd quarter of the range. The
bottom quarter of the range is 1.2-5.35 And 9.6 is mid-range. <br />
PM 5.4 (.5 - 12.1) This result is a bit below mid-range, which is 6.3. The top quarter of the range is .5-3.4 <br />
Night 2.3 (.3 - 11.0) This result is in the top quarter which is .3-3.0 <br />
<i><br /></i><i>I believe that these
March results were SKEWED HIGH because of the adrenal supplement I had
been taking less than two weeks before. <br /><br />Although, it's possible that
even if my levels weren't skewed terribly high, that they dropped
further by May because Ct3M wasn't working using NDT. I did feel a lot
better when I started using T3 for it in June.</i><br />
<br />
<b>5/28 </b><br />
AM 11.4 (2.4 - 33.7) This result is just above top quarter, which is 2.4-10.23. Mid-range is 18.05 <br />
Noon 2.7 (1.2 - 17) This result is in the top quarter, which is 1.2-5.15 <br />
PM 1.5 (.5 - 12.1) This result is in the bottom quarter, which is .5-3.4<br />
MN .6 (.3 - 11.0) This result is in the bottom quarter which is .3-3.0<br />
<br />

<b>10/29/12</b></div>
Morning 0.88 (0.27 - 1.18) This result is in the 3rd quarter .725-.95 (that is mid-range to the bottom of the top quarter)
Noon 0.27 (0.10 - 0.41) This result is just over mid-range which is .26<br />
Evening 0.10 (0.05 - 0.27) This result is at the top of the bottom quarter which is .05-.11 Mid-range is .16 <br />
Bedtime <0.03 (0.03 - 0.14) Perfect.<br />

Morning .90 (0.27 - 1.18) This result is in the 3rd quarter .725-.95 (that is mid-range to the bottom of the top quarter) - just below the top quarter of the range<br />
Noon .25 (0.10 - 0.41) This result is just under mid-range which is .26<br />
Evening .11 (0.05 - 0.27) This result is at the top of the bottom quarter which is .05-.11 Mid-range is .16 <br />

Given that I've made a few discoveries since then and learned that healing is going to take longer than I thought, I figured I should write an update! </span></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm still taking Natural Dessicated Thyroid (NDT) hormones. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm also still taking Cytomel brand T3 for the <a href="http://recoveringwitht3.com/blog/circadian-t3-method-ct3m-or-t3cm" target="_blank">Circadian T3 Method</a> which I have been using since the end of March 2012 to heal my adrenals. (You can read <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/08/my-story-how-circadian-t3-method-has.html" target="_blank">here</a> how CT3M and the other things I'm doing have changed my life, and you can r<a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/overview-on-my-adrenal-healing-thus-far.html" target="_blank">ead here to see</a> how my adrenals have healed).</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm starting <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/supplements-for-helicobacter-pylori.html" target="_blank">my treatment plan</a> for eradicating <a href="http://www.mygutsy.com/is-h-pylori-the-cause-of-allergies-brain-fog-hypothyroid-autoimmune-disorders-adrenal-fatigue/" target="_blank">Helicobacter pylori</a>, which <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/low-iron-hpylori-lactoferrin-and-low.html" target="_blank">will help raise my iron levels.</a></span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm continuing progesterone shots, which will help <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/you-are-not-alone.html" target="_blank">support my adrenals</a> as well.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm continuing my gluten-free diet, as well as limiting grains and
dairy, focusing on non-processed foods. High fat, moderate protein,
with plenty of veggies (admittedly, I struggle to eat enough!) and limited sugars
(natural, no refined) is the diet I feel best consuming. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">All of the above, as well as good sleep, good <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/supplements-and-more-that-i-like-to-use.html" target="_blank">vitamins and supplements</a>, and stress-reducing practices, to help heal my whole body, including adrenals. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The biggest new thing I'm working on is <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/04/mthfr-in-my-life.html" target="_blank">my methylation issues</a> due to having <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/mthfr/" target="_blank">MTHFR gene mutation</a>. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Also, remember my <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/05/symptoms-update.html" target="_blank">symptoms list</a>? Last March, I was down to about six symptoms. I was feeling really good and starting to work on my methylation issues. Then I had some <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/celiac-sourdough-fail-hypothyroid-and.html" target="_blank">gluten mis-adventures</a>, which really set me back. I'm still amazed at how identical those symptoms were to my hypo/adrenal symptoms. </span></span><br />
<br />
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you're just beginning your journey to health: </span></span></h4>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Then, remember:</span></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you're going to get well, you have to assume ownership of your health issues and control over your education about those health issues. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you have brain fog, you have to read and re-read.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Find a support network in various areas of your life. This might include family members, friends, health care providers, a health coach, or peers who share your health issues in real life or in support groups online, like <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/talk-to-others/" target="_blank">these</a>. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">There will be stumbling blocks.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Healing ebbs and flows. There are good days and bad.</span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Step away. Sometimes we can get bogged down in learning about our health issues. Learn when to step away from it all and get centered on the other things that matter - like faith, family and friends. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you're not familiar with Janie Bowthorpe's <i>Stop the Thyroid Madness </i>website,
blog and books, I will enlighten you to the fact that this is the
precise reason why she has had such huge, rapid success: <br /> </span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Patient-based experience and patient-based information sharing </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">is the brilliant, short-cut way to learning </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">about the reasons for your health issues and how to treat them. </span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you've been on this journey a while and you're road-weary:</span></span></h4>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Then, keep plugging away. You are not alone. Review the basics and make sure you're supported by peers who are on this journey, as well.</span></span></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-58481866845947262172013-05-27T19:44:00.000-04:002013-05-27T19:48:31.881-04:00Supplements and More that I like to useThis post is an update to <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/01/stuff-i-like-to-use.html" target="_blank">this one</a>. <br />

You are not alone!<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Some time ago, on my page about <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/01/my-story.html" target="_blank">My Story</a> and in my posts <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/b/post-preview?token=1WU-5T4BAAA.hJ8L1SyH2gVRmOuwgvjsow.I2gWGUds_50UHwXpiG4Tmw&postId=6959243096151303034&type=POST" target="_blank">"The Progesterone and Cortisol Relationship</a>," <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/09/progesterone-and-other-reproductive.html" target="_blank">"Progesterone and Other Reproductive Hormones</a>," and "<a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/04/progesterone-new-post.html" target="_blank">Progesterone: A New Post</a>," I wrote about my belief that my adrenals steal progesterone to make more cortisol - similar to what Dr. Rind writes about <a href="http://www.drrind.com/therapies/estrogen-dominance" target="_blank">here</a>. <br /><br />In fact, I'm convinced that was the cause of my miscarriage in September 2011, before I began truly digging deep into the causes behind my health issues. <br /><br />Through lab work, I have confirmed that at the end of my progesterone supplementation during my luteal phase, my cortisol levels are significantly higher than they are two weeks later once the progesterone was out of my system. I realize that not all women experience this, but it is clear that I do based on my symptoms and my labs. <br /><br />I also believe that for women like me whose progesterone levels are low as a direct result of their adrenal dysfunction that it is crucial to make that connection. And I suspect that it might be crucial to not only supplement progesterone with bio-identical progesterone, but also address the adrenal issues that are at root.<br /><br />You can read <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/06/my-answer-to-how-did-you-do-it.html" target="_blank">here</a> about how I have taken charge of my health issues and how I'm healing my body.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://mthfr.net/mthfr-mutations-and-the-conditions-they-cause/2011/09/07/" target="_blank">One underlying condition that can contribute largely to miscarriage</a> is called MTHFR gene mutation. There are five of them. You can read about MTHFR <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/mthfr/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/04/mthfr-in-my-life.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </span></span><br />
<br />
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> A word about Progesterone and Post Partum Depression: </span></span></h4>
<h4>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></span></h4>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In some of the above posts, especially "<a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/04/progesterone-new-post.html" target="_blank">Progesterone: A New Post</a>" and <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/06/bio-identical-progesterone-for-post.html" target="_blank">this one</a>, I have written about the relationship between progesterone and Post-Partum Depression (PPD). I am not a doctor or trained medical professional, but I have networked with a lot of women and read extensively on these health issues. And I believe that in some cases, thyroid dysfunction is a large contributing factor for adrenal dysfunction and that, as I wrote before, adrenal dysfunction is the issue behind the progesterone deficiency in many women. <br /><br />In my <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/03/progesterone-old-post.html" target="_blank">Old Post</a> on progesterone, I wrote about the dramatic difference that progesterone supplementation made for me in my struggled with PPD after my second (and full-term) pregnancy. <br /><br />But after my miscarriage about a year and a half later, progesterone supplementation didn't make as dramatic a difference. I strongly suspect that was because I had moved from having slight adrenal fatigue to much worse adrenal fatigue, and therefore from slight issues with my adrenals stealing cortisol to much worse issues with my adrenals stealing cortisol. There is no way to know for sure since I have no cortisol labs to look at from that time, but this is my belief. </span></span><br />
<br />
<h4>
You are not alone</h4>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">If you are a woman struggling with these health issues, you are not alone. There are answers. There are some wonderful resources out there - <a href="http://naturallyknockedup.com/" target="_blank">blogs</a>, websites, <a href="http://naprotechnology.com/" target="_blank">health care professionals</a>, and patient-to-patient forums including <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/talk-to-others/" target="_blank">Stop the Thyroid Madness's groups</a>.</span> Read; connect with other women who are struggling and learn what has worked for them; and try to get to the bottom of your health issues. After <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2013/05/low-iron-hpylori-lactoferrin-and-low.html" target="_blank">realizing the connection</a> with my health issues and Helicobacter pylori, I was prompted to move forward more quickly with choosing a treatment plan. Here are the supplements I've chosen:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00020IECO/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">Licorice Root Extract</a><br />

<a href="http://www.vitacost.com/bragg-apple-cider-vinegar-organic-raw-32-fl-oz-1" target="_blank">Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar</a> (which will help absorption of supplements, as well)<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triphala" target="_blank">Triphala</a> (as a <a href="http://mountainroseblog.com/guide-tinctures-extracts/" target="_blank">tincture</a>)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OVVAK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER" target="_blank">Mastic Gum</a><br />
<br />
unrefined <a href="http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-extra-virgin-certified-organic-coconut-oil-54-fl-oz-9" target="_blank">coconut oil</a><br />
<br />
Also, possibly Bentonite Clay, plus Oregon Grape or Berberine Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-56033163806419612912013-05-12T16:00:00.000-04:002013-07-07T02:09:01.307-04:00Low Iron: H.pylori, Lactoferrin and Low Stomach Acid<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In my sleuthing to try to discover why my iron levels have been rising so poorly in the past year, despite dosing by <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/" target="_blank">patient-proven methods</a>, I have pieced together some valuable information. </span></span><br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9207257" target="_blank">H.pylori</a><span style="color: black;"><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9207257" target="_blank"> causes low stomach acid</a> (also, <a href="http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/dig10.php" target="_blank">this</a>).</span></span></span></li>

<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><a href="http://www.healthyfellow.com/309/lactoferrin-and-anemia/http://www.healthyfellow.com/309/lactoferrin-and-anemia/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: small;">L</span>ow lactoferrin levels can contribute to low iron levels</a>.</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">T</span>here is some evidence that <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14620619" target="_blank">bovine lactoferrin supplements can help eradicate H.pylori</a>. </span></span></li>
</ol>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="color: black;">Low stomach acid is frequently discussed on the Stop the Thyroid Madness patient to patient discussion groups, since many hypothyroid patients struggle with low stomach acid and therefore struggle to raise low iron levels. Janie writes about low stomach acid <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/stomach-acid/" target="_blank">here</a>.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="color: black;">These pieces to my own low iron puzzle make sense, especially in light of the fact that my ferritin levels more than doubled after just 5 weeks of taking my iron supplements with not just Vitamin C but also <a href="http://bragg.com/products/acv.html" target="_blank">ACV</a></span>, prompted by Janie! <span style="color: black;"> </span></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Also, there is evidence that </span>H.pylori can cause or at least <a href="http://www.nleducation.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/LIT-154-H-Pylori-Article.pdf" target="_blank">contribute to intestinal permeability</a>, increasing inflammation and food sensitivity/allergies. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The <a href="http://www.nleducation.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/LIT-154-H-Pylori-Article.pdf" target="_blank">previously linked article</a> lists the following options for eradicating H.pylori:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Clove</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Berberine</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Licorice (note that this herb can lower potassium levels and can raise blood pressure)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Wild Indigo</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Slippery Elm</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Myrrh</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Barberry</span></li>

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="color: black;">In Caroline Lunger's <a href="http://www.mygutsy.com/is-h-pylori-the-cause-of-allergies-brain-fog-hypothyroid-autoimmune-disorders-adrenal-fatigue/" target="_blank">blog post</a>, she lists <a href="http://www.holisticheal.com/h-pylori-antigen-stool.html" target="_blank">this lab test</a> as well as <a href="http://www.ulcer-cure.com/H_Pylori/h-pylori-test.php" target="_blank">a link</a> for why it <span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: small;">i</span></span>s the most reliable one. It runs $110. Other than Maryland or New York state residents, US residents can order it without a doctor. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">There is also the <a href="http://www.metametrix.com/test-menu/profiles/gastrointestinal-function/dna-stool-analysis-gi-effects" target="_blank">MetaMetrix GI Effects Stool Test</a> which tests for not only H.Pylori, but also opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria, yeast/fungi, parasites, inflammation, digestion, absorption, gluten-intolerance, <span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;">short chain fatty acids, adiposity, and </span>drug resistant genes (which is useful if you need to treat the above)</span>. This test has to be ordered by a doctor. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The MetaMetrix test costs $99 upfront. My understanding based on my experience is that <u><b>IF</b></u>
you have insurance that covers in part, Genova (whom MetaMetrix is under) knocks off the $99 you sent in with the samples, then they bill your insurance with the information you submitted with your samples. But, for insurance purposes they "have" to send you an additional bill for
almost $500 more. According to my doctor's office, they send this bill twice, then drop the additional fees, <i>as long as you have insurance covering in part.</i> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Honestly, I think they are banking on the fact that some people are going to send in that extra $500 without asking. I have friends on the patient-to-patient groups who have done this.

progesterone and using CT3M) about progesterone and the ways that it
could be affecting us.<br />
<ul>
<li>As T3 goes up, cortisol is supposed to go up, too.</li>
<li> Since Cortisol
is directly synthesized from progesterone in the adrenal cortex, it
makes sense that as a woman's T3 amounts go and adrenals respond with
more cortisol, her body would need to make more progesterone to be able
to synthesize that cortisol.</li>
<li>Progesterone is made from
pregnenolone, but it is secreted from the corpus luteum. <i> </i></li>
<ul>
<li><i>(*This is
important information for women who have had their ovaries removed! They
MUST have progesterone replaced in their bodies.</i>) </li>
<li>So, as the need
for more cortisol rises with the rise in T3, so did would the need for
more progesterone. This is important for any woman who is on
progesterone replacement for whatever reason; theoretically, she would
need more progesterone as she progresses with CT3M.</li>
</ul>
</ul>
<br />
Also, I think we might need progesterone for the conversion of T4 to T3? Can't remember.<br />
<br />
Finally, keeping in mind that cortisol assists with/affects:<br />
Mood<br />
Raising the BP<br />
Blood sugar regulation<br />
immune system<br />
Depression<br />
Salt uptake<br />

We greatly enjoyed doing that together and knowing that we were consuming fresh bread with ingredients we could control was gratifying.<br /><br />After almost a year of being gluten-free, I wondered if we might be able to eat true, fermented sourdough bread, <a href="http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/can-celiacs-eat-true-sourdough-bread/" target="_blank">as others with gluten issues have been reported to do</a>. The idea is that the fermentation process breaks down many of the intolerable properties of wheat, including the gluten. <br /><br />Then I talked with a friend whose little boy with gluten sensitivity can eat her "extra" fermented sourdough starter recipe for pancakes. <br /><br />I also read in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nourishing-Traditions-Challenges-Politically-Dictocrats/dp/0967089735" target="_blank"><i>Nourishing Traditions</i></a> about our ancestors' habits of making bread this way, as opposed to yeast breads, which were not introduced until relatively recently. They didn't have nearly the issues we have with gluten, now, did they? <br /><br />Maybe . . . just maybe we could eat it, too, I thought. <br /><br />So after Easter this year, I began my own <a href="http://nourishedkitchen.com/how-to-make-a-sourdough-starter/" target="_blank">sourdough starter</a> using <a href="http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/king-arthur-unbleached-all-purpose-flour-5-lb" target="_blank">King Arthur Flour</a>. <br /><br />I so enjoyed the rhythm of feeding my starter by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Danish-Dough-Whisk-Size-Large/dp/B002PABWJQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368217717&sr=8-1&keywords=danish+dough+whisk" target="_blank">whisking</a> in water, then flour. I relished seeing it on the counter in its <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Anchor-Hocking-1-Gallon-Heritage-Glass/dp/B0000DDVN7/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1367262441&sr=8-6&keywords=anchor+hocking+glass" target="_blank">jar</a>. <br /><br />When the time came to make the first loaf of bread, I used <a href="http://nourishedkitchen.com/no-knead-sourdough-bread/" target="_blank">this recipe</a>. I blended part of the starter with water and flour and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Selina-Naturally-Celtic-Light-Course/dp/B000TIZP5I/ref=sr_1_4?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1366648702&sr=1-4&keywords=unrefined+sea+salt" target="_blank">salt</a>. I let it rise for 24 hours to give time for the gluten in the newly incorporated flour to get broken down by the starter. And I baked it on my baking stone over a boiling-water bath - all just as the recipe calls for. <br /><br />It turned out a little dense. I needed to get back into the "feel" of bread-making since it had been so long since I'd done it. <br /><br />But it was delicious and we ate the first loaf with dinner guests, and felt no ill effects from it. <br /><br />When the time came to make a second loaf of bread, I sifted the flour before measuring. I even weighed it after measuring to compare. I also skipped the water bath in the oven since the extra rising time gave the bread a sort of crust (the first loaf was<i> </i>too crusty). <br /><br />It was perfect!<br /><br />But after two days, my oldest daughter and I both
reacted horribly. Her behavior was awful for about a week -
irritable, aggressive, defiant - all very unlike her! My husband and I kept remembering how difficult things were in our house before we went gluten-free. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><br />For myself, I experienced intense hypothyroid and adrenal fatigue symptoms. For a few days, my
whole body felt like lead and I was extremely fatigued in the afternoons. And for weeks, I experienced:</span></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">
brain fog</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">ear ache</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">fluid in my ears</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">carpal tunnel flared up in both wrists</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">afternoon
fatigue</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">dry skin</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">acne</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">water retention</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">weight gain (10 lbs.) </span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">hair loss</span></span></li>
<li><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">irritability</span></span></li>
</ul>
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">The hair loss and
irritability have still continued even to now, although taking the adrenal adaptogen Rhodiola has
helped the irritability the past few days. <br /><br />Before the gluten, I felt wonderful. I was having none of these symptoms, except some slight hair loss, some slight water retention in my ankles, and acne but only when my estrogen peaks.</span></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-42280827426060900892013-04-27T15:24:00.000-04:002013-04-27T15:24:00.328-04:00Thyroid 101<a href="http://mcb.berkeley.edu/courses/mcb135e/thyroid.html">http://mcb.berkeley.edu/courses/mcb135e/thyroid.html</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-45766036140456630472013-04-26T12:04:00.003-04:002013-04-27T13:36:29.928-04:00Gymnema Leaf: Good News for Diabetics<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">I've been reading about herbs

I'm reading that it helps "delay the glucose absorption in the blood"and
that "the basic function of the acids is to bind to the receptor on the
intestine, and stop the glucose molecule from binding to the receptor.
Thus, gymnemic acids prevent the absorption of excess glucose."<br /><br />It
can also help with "curbing the sugar craving" which could be useful
not only for diabetics but also candida sufferers, which, as we know, is
connected because of the blood sugar imbalance. <br />
<br />For myself, I'm excited to hear that "when <i>Gymnema</i> leaf extract is administered to a diabetic
patient, there is stimulation of the pancreas by virtue of which there
is an increase in insulin release." I just might have to look into this further!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2170951/" target="_blank">http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/</a><wbr></wbr><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2170951/" target="_blank">pmc/articles/PMC2170951/</a><br /><br />Also:</span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">"Double-blind studies [1] confirm that the therapy they have developed can cure up to 60% of patients by restoring proper beta cell function. The deciding factor appears to be whether the antigens which originally caused the auto-immune response which damaged the beta cells are still in the patient's body. Where they remain in the body a cure is less likely because they continue to trigger damaging immune system activity. Work on how to remove the antigens continues."</span> <span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><a href="http://www.greenhealthwatch.com/newsstories/newsillnesses/cure-diabetes1.html" target="_blank">http://www.greenhealthwatch.com/newsstories/newsillnesses/cure-diabetes1.html</a></span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">And so it would seem that the key is removing the antigens before being able to use the herb successfully. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-35725803715377166012013-04-14T15:13:00.003-04:002013-04-14T15:13:47.833-04:00Pomegranate: An Alternative To Hormone Replacement Therapy?<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span>"Experiments have been performed revealing that pomegranate

If the sodium isn't balanced with potassium so that the <a href="https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/human-biology/v/correction-to-sodium-and-potassium-pump-video" target="_blank">potassium can pump the sodium into the cells</a>, histamine takes over to do the job. <br />

reductase, enzyme deficiency on the STTM patient to patient groups. My
first reaction was to blow it off, which I did. I did not want <i>another </i>health
issue to deal with in addition to my juvenile diabetes, Hashi's,
adrenal fatigue, very low iron, Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and
endometriosis with low progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. I
finally felt like I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, so to
speak, with regard to my hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue! I was
treating my issues well and finally getting a taste of feeling good, and
I just wasn't ready to deal with some other health issue! <br />
<br />But as time went on and I learned more about it from other patients, I realized that this gene mutation just could be the<i> </i>thing
that connected the dots. And what if treating it would not be another
health issue to add to my list, but rather would speed along my healing
in the long-run, if it was part of the core underneath all these layers?<br />
<br />In the back of my mind, I also wondered if testing and treating
MTHFR, which is connected with miscarriage in some women, could help me
to conceive again and carry to term? After I miscarried, my health hit
rock-bottom and that was the impetus behind my finding STTM and seeking
proper treatment for my thyroid and adrenal issues. <br />
<br />Still, I put off testing. <br /><br />Then I had labs drawn that
revealed I had high B12 levels, despite only getting a small amount of
B12 in my B complex. I had multiple people suggest that it could be due
to having MTHFR, due to the fact that the test reveals blood levels of
B12, not the levels that are getting into the cells. I knew then that I
should get tested for MTHFR.<br />
<br />Since I have a very supportive health care provider, I chose to start with getting <a href="https://www.labcorp.com/wps/portal/%21ut/p/c1/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3h_U2cv30B_IwN_f3MDA88APyM_byN_Q3cfA30_j_zcVP2CbEdFAPxk0ls%21/dl2/d1/L0lDU0lKSWdrbUEhIS9JRFJBQUlpQ2dBek15cXchL1lCSkoxTkExTkk1MC01RncvN19PNUNKTVFPMjBPTzcwMElQTjJOSzJPMUdENS9JX19fXzE%21/?WCM_PORTLET=PC_7_O5CJMQO20OO700IPN2NK2O1GD5_WCM&WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/connect/IntGeneticsLib/integratedgenetics/home/our+services/reproductive+testing/mthfr-test" target="_blank">the Lab Corp blood test</a> which my insurance would cover entirely. (Many patients choose to test through <a href="http://23andme.com/" target="_blank">23andme.com</a>, which is excellent.) <br />
<br />But the lab sheet results were confusing, suggesting that it was not
important if a person has the A1298C copy of the mutation, if they do
not have the C677T copy, which is the one associated with having
elevated homocysteine levels while the A1298C copy is not (when the
C677T copy is not present). The doctor at the LabCorp laboratory
confirmed this, as well. <br />
<br />So I did what has been the number one best help to me: I sought the
advice of other patients. After talking with other patients on the
MTHFR support groups, I felt confident that this is not the case - <i>that having </i>any<i> MTHFR mutation is significant</i> - and I decided to move forward with my treatment. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br />
</span></span><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;">I started with taking methylated B12 and felt an improvement in my energy levels quickly. I am taking my treatment plan <i>very </i>slowly.
Later, I plan to add methyl-folate. If I tolerate that with no ill
effects, I will then try a methylated B complex. Again, all of this
will be done very slowly so as to track symptoms and reactions, and
generally allow my body time to respond. </span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br />
</span></span>At the same time that I had my MTHFR lab drawn, I had
my copper, ceruloplasmin and zinc levels checked. Those revealed that
my free copper levels were double what they should be and my zinc was
low. <br />
<br />So shortly after starting the methyl-B12, I started trying to
balance my high copper and low zinc by taking zinc picolinate. I chose
Solgar brand which is 22 mg per tablet. <br />
<br />Unfortunately, the detox process resulted in what seemed like a
return of my hypothyroid and adrenal fatigue symptoms - some of which I
had not felt in ages! I was fatigued especially in the afternoon, had
cold hands and feet, no motivation, was easily stressed, irritable,
emotional, emotionally sensitive, weepy, and had sore breasts, acne, and
water retention in my ankles. Whoah! This was a lot to hit me (again)
in a relatively short period of time. <br />
<br />I stopped taking my zinc supplement to see if that was the culprit.
Within a day and a half, I felt like myself again. It was surprising! <br /><br />I
plan to resume my zinc picolinate supplementation, but I will opt for a
lower dose - probably a quarter of the 22 mg tablets to start - and I
will increase as time goes on, but s-l-o-w-l-y. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br />It's worth mentioning that m</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"></span><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: georgia,serif;">olybdenum can help detox copper, and P-5-P (the active form of B6) and magnesium can help reduce symptoms. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;">
</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: georgia,serif;"><span style="color: black;"><br />I am confident that as time goes on, treating my MTHFR will help my
other health issues to diminish. I am also very thankful to have
learned that I have this gene mutation, since my children are likely to
have it as well. </span></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-67928025204682091122013-03-16T19:13:00.004-04:002013-03-16T19:13:49.123-04:00Healthy Homemade Chocolate Cups<a href="http://empoweredsustenance.com/healthy-homemadechocolate-cups/">http://empoweredsustenance.com/healthy-homemadechocolate-cups/</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-38901873010289492532013-03-14T20:36:00.000-04:002013-03-14T20:36:00.548-04:00Hypothyroid Symptoms<a href="http://www.thyroidchange.org/300-hypothyroidism-symptoms-yes-really/">http://www.thyroidchange.org/300-hypothyroidism-symptoms-yes-really/</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4617326334341276527.post-73708377975741381482013-01-28T15:03:00.001-05:002013-03-03T15:09:55.863-05:00Supplements and More that I like to useI realized my previous post on <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/07/stuff-i-like-to-use.html" target="_blank">"Stuff I like to use"</a> needed to updated. <h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-weight: normal;">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}" style="font-size: small;">In mid-January 2012, I did something that changed my life. I switched from
Levothyroxine, a synthetic T4-only medication (like Synthroid), to Natural
Dessicated Thyroid (NDT). <br /> <br /> I had been on thyroxine for over 10 years, b<span style="font-size: small;">u</span>t</span><span style="font-size: small;"> something wasn't right. <br /> <br /> I was experiencing 76 symptoms, including long-term depression and weight gain, irrit<span class="text_exposed_show">ability,
flu-like aches, foggy-thinking, and chronic fatigue. It took me four
hours to feel awake in the mornings. By 1 or 2 in the afternoons, I was
sluggish and felt the need to <span style="font-size: small;">consume</span> caffeine and sugar to get
through the afternoon. I was impatient and irritable with my family,
especially my kids. My hair was falling out; my skin had aged quickly. In general, I had a foreboding feeling, as if a dark cloud was hanging
overhead. <br /><br />Three months after switching to <span style="font-size: small;">NDT</span> and one month after starting the Circadian T3 Method (CT3M), every single one of those 76 symptoms was
significantly better than they were in January. <span style="font-size: small;">E</span>ight months later, my list of symptoms was down to 12. <span style="font-size: small;">(<a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/09/symptoms-overview.html" target="_blank">Read </a><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/09/symptoms-overview.html" target="_blank">my post comparing those </a><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/09/symptoms-overview.html" target="_blank">symptoms here.</a>)</span></span></span><br /> <br />
The symptoms I was experiencing were the direct result of being on T4-only medicatio<span style="font-size: small;">n</span> - a medication which is widely
prescribed for large <span style="font-size: small;">body</span> of people - and doctors who
are trained to use <span style="font-size: small;">t<span style="font-size: small;">he</span></span> <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/tsh-why-its-useless/" target="_blank">TSH<span style="font-size: small;"> lab <span style="font-size: small;">t<span style="font-size: small;">est</span></span></span></a> to assess thyroid health. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/t4-only-meds-dont-work/">T4-Only Thyroid Meds Don't Work.</a> <br /> <br />
If my story resonates with you, if you experience any of the symptoms listed <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/long-and-pathetic/" target="_blank">here</a>, or if you are
on a synthetic T-4 only medication, read the <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/" target="_blank"><i>Stop the Thyroid Madness </i>website</a>. <br /><br />There are
thousands of patients reporting that natural dessicated thyroid has
given them better quality of life than Synthroid. </span></span></h6>

<span style="font-size: small;"><u>Further background:</u> </span></h3>
<span style="font-size: small;">My mom's pregnancy with me was <span style="font-size: small;">a high<span style="font-size: small;">-risk <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/placenta-previa/DS00588" target="_blank">complete placenta previa</a><span style="font-size: small;">, in<span style="font-size: small;">volving three massi<span style="font-size: small;">ve hem<span style="font-size: small;">orrhages, the last o<span style="font-size: small;">f which result<span style="font-size: small;">ed in a<span style="font-size: small;">n <span style="font-size: small;">emergency cesarean<span style="font-size: small;"> and my birth at 32 weeks gestation. I spent ti<span style="font-size: small;">me in the NICU. So<span style="font-size: small;"> cortis<span style="font-size: small;">ol issues were naturally present for me even before my birth. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br /><br />Then at age 6, I was diagnosed with <b>type I diabetes</b>, an autoimmune disease. I did shots for ten years and I have had an <b><a href="http://www.medtronicdiabetes.net/treatmentoptions/insulinpumptherapy" target="_blank">insulin pump</a></b> since 2000. <span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><b>H</b><b>eavy, painful periods</b> with low back pain have been my "norm" since I was 12. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In hindsight, <span style="font-size: small;">I <span style="font-size: small;">c</span></span>an see signs of adrenal dysfunction going back to my premature birth at 32 weeks gestation. But it was during my senior year of high school, when I was incredi<span style="font-size: small;">bly busy and stressed,</span> that I began to show serious signs of <span style="font-size: small;"><b>hypothyroidism</b> and </span><b>adrenal fatigue</b>. <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">My

left home, so <span style="font-size: small;">I</span> didn't have a comfortable grasp
of how to manage my new lifestyle. Still, I can say with confidence that I
would not have been able to hack college life without my pump! </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I can't help but add that the <b>cafeteria food</b> at my college was downright treacherous. Loads of white flour and
sugar; extremely limited
vegetables and fruits; vegetable oil on or in everything!</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I finished my freshman year of college exhausted. After a month of summer break, I had not
recuperated, despite good food and lots of sleep. I was falling asleep<span style="font-size: small;"> mid<span style="font-size: small;">-morning</span></span>. <br /><br />I requested to be <b>tested for mono</b> and was full of disbelief
when the results came back negative. <span style="font-size: small;">Then, with the </span><a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/02/why-tsh-is-poor-tool-for-evaluating.html" target="_blank">TSH lab test</a>, </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">my endocrinologist diagnosed me<span style="font-size: small;"> with</span></span> hypothyroidism and she <span style="font-size: small;">p</span>rescribed <a href="http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/t4-only-meds-dont-work/" target="_blank">T4-only thyroid medication</a> Levoxyl.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Shortly
before summer break was over, I decided not <span style="font-size: small;">to go back to <span style="font-size: small;">the c<span style="font-size: small;">ollege I had <span style="font-size: small;">attended, but rather </span></span></span></span>to stay at home and attend a
local university. But a few weeks into school, I had a <b>nervous breakdown</b>. I could not handle any stress whatsoever. Deciding what to wear and eat - even the thou<span style="font-size: small;">ght<span style="font-size: small;"> of <span style="font-size: small;">organizing a to<span style="font-size: small;">-do list -</span></span></span></span> sent me into a <span style="font-size: small;">tailspin.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />My parents pulled me out of
school and I took the rest of the semester off, recuperated and spent time with my family. <br /><br />It was at this time that my endocrinologist prescribed me Prozac for my <b>depression and anxiety</b>. <i>I
stayed on Prozac for ten years. At </i>no time<i> did Prozac
help me; it merely dulled my senses, lowering my highs and heightening my lows. </i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><i><br /></i></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">In
January I returned to the college where I had spent my freshman year. I
rapidly gained weight, despite being off the college's
meal plan and cooking my own food. Despite my efforts, no amount
of dieting and exercise led to weight lose. <br /><br />This was when I began to experience <b>facial swellin</b><b>g</b> and <b>tightness in my neck and throat</b>. I
thought I had a peanut allergy! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">By my junior year of college, I had <b>gained over 50 pounds</b>. For the first time in my life, I experienced <b>suicidal ideation</b>. </span><br />

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">During college, I began to learn the <a href="http://www.naprotechnology.com/index.html" target="_blank">Creighton Model NaproTechnology,</a> formulated by <a href="http://www.drhilgers.com/" target="_blank">Dr. Thomas Hilgers</a> of the <a href="http://www.popepaulvi.com/" target="_blank">Pope Paul VI Institute</a>, for my reproductive issues.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">During the summer of 2004 that Dr. Hilgers informed me of his assessment that I had endometriosis and <a href="http://www.naprotechnology.com/infertility.htm" target="_blank">Poly-Cystic Ovarian Disease</a>, abbreviated PCOD or PCOS. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In December
2004, I finished my college degree<span style="font-size: small;"> then<span style="font-size: small;"> immediately travel<span style="font-size: small;">e</span></span></span>d to Omaha, NE where Dr.
Hilgers and his associate performed an <b>ultrasound,
laparoscopy, luna procedure<span style="font-size: small;">,</span> and lasered my endometriosis. <span style="font-size: small;">PCOS <span style="font-size: small;">and endometriosis were confirmed.</span></span></b><br /><br />(A luna procedure involves the
severing of a ligament that runs down the back of the uterine wall. Part
of this severing is permanent, while another part regrows. I was told that the
procedure was formerly used by surgeons in<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>the 1980's, but <span style="font-size: small;">fell out of p<span style="font-size: small;">ractice. It </span></span>has since been improved by Dr. Hilgers and his staff.) </span></div>

</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In July 2005, I had <b>carpal tunnel surgery</b> on my right wrist.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In 2006, I got married and in May 2006 conceived our first child, a girl. She was born in 2007. Her birth was a traumatic one in many ways. She was born six weeks prematurely by cesarean and spent two weeks in the NICU.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">For some reason, in April 2007 my endocrinologist told me to stop taking my Levothyroxine and I stupidly listened. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In late June 2007, we moved half-way across the country to live close to family. We lived with my
parents for a short time. My husband finally got a job. That was stressful!</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">At this time, I weighed about 205 lbs.</span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In October 2007 (the soonest I could get an appointment with an endocrinologist), my TSH was 36. I felt horrible! My doctor put me on Levothyroxine.</span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In September 2008, I hit a low with my depression. My cycles were horribly long - sometimes 190 days. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In December 2008, I went off Prozac. It wasn't helping and I was mad. I successfully stayed off Prozac with the help of increasing my levels of <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/03/vitamin-d3.html" target="_blank">Vitamin D3</a> to 10,000 IU. I would later increase this to 20,000 IU. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In January 2009, I had a <a href="http://www.spectracell.com/mnt/" target="_blank">Spectracell Lab Test</a>
done, through my new doctor's office. I started taking lot of vitamins
and supplements based on my results. I was also walking more and
making nutritional changes like incorporating raw milk into my diet and
cutting out hydrogenated oils. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">In
April 2009, I conceived our second daughter. This pregnancy was a very
difficult one, full of stress, anxiety and trepidation. I now realize
that in addition to a poorly treated thyroid, I had extreme adrenal fatigue and low progesterone levels, although
I had no signs of possible miscarriage. <br /><br />One tell-tale sign of my
adrenal fatigue was that every evening, I had extremely sensitive skin,
bodily aches, and fatigue. Afternoons were difficult as well. I was
very short-tempered and irritable. I didn't know why; I
mentioned these things to my doctors, but they just sort of shrugged<span style="font-size: small;"> and looked thoughtful.</span> So, I chalked it up to pregnancy. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Shortly
before our daughter's birth in January 2012, I had several sinus
infections which I was not able to successfully treat with natural methods, so I went
on antibiotics. I was also on antibiotics during labor for being GBS+
(Group B Strep Positive). </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">For a number of reasons I will not go into here, our daughter was born by cesarean and weighed a whopping 10 pounds 4 ounces!</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">A few weeks after surgery, my incision developed an infection and I had to go on a very strong antibiotic. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<h3>
<span style="font-size: small;"><u>Post</u><span style="font-size: small;"><u>-Partum Depression</u></span></span></h3>
<span style="font-size: small;"></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">When I was about six weeks post-partum, my <a href="http://www.creightonmodel.com/" target="_blank">Creighton Model</a> Practitioner helped me to realize that I was suffering from <a href="http://www.popepaulvi.com/ncfwh-evaltreat.htm#depression" target="_blank">post-partum depression</a>
as the result of extremely low progesterone. <br /><br />It was a very dark time
in my life. Due to the stress my body was under, my milk supply
dropped. I was heartbroken, but determined to put every effort I could
into regaining my supply, which I did, so that I could nurse my daughter. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">Thankfully, the PPD was helped immensely by natural, bio-identical <a href="http://www.popepaulvi.com/ncfwh-evaltreat.htm#depression" target="_blank">progesterone</a> through Dr. Hilgers. Please, read <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/03/progesterone-old-post.html" target="_blank">this</a> and <a href="http://nolongerlivingdead.blogspot.com/2012/04/progesterone-new-post.html" target="_blank">this</a>. <span style="font-size: small;">Looking <span style="font-size: small;">back at the labs (TSH, F<span style="font-size: small;">T<span style="font-size: small;">4)</span></span> my <span style="font-size: small;">doctor was running, it is clear that my<span style="font-size: small;"> thyroid hormones dropped at this time<span style="font-size: small;">. </span></span></span></span></span></span> </div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">At this time, I weighed about 215 lbs. </span><br />
<h3>
<u><span style="font-size: small;">Cyc<span style="font-size: small;">lical Progesterone Tre<span style="font-size: small;">atment, <span style="font-size: small;">a <span style="font-size: small;">New Baby, Miscarr<span style="font-size: small;">iage</span></span></span></span></span></span></u></h3>
<span style="font-size: small;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">In
May 2011, I began working with Dr. Hilgers at Pope Paul VI Institute on
cyclical bio-identical progesterone treatment, as well as Low-<span style="font-size: small;">D</span>ose
Naltrexone (LDN), for my infertility issues. Our primary goal was to regain
reproductive health for the overall health of my body. However, we
weren't opposed to having another baby. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In July 2011, we conceived our third child.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">But,
at the end of August 2011, my progesterone plummeted despite on
bio-identical progesterone and having my levels checked weekly. There
was a mix-up <i>three times in a row </i>at the lab where my blood was drawn, and Dr. Hilgers never received the blood to run my labs at his <a href="http://www.popepaulvi.com/ncfwh-hormonelab.htm" target="_blank">National Hormone Lab</a>. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">In September 2011, our baby died at 8 weeks and I passed him or her at 11 weeks. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">It
is my belief that my miscarriage was the result of my thyroid and
adrenal dysfunction, as well as my low progesterone which is related to
those. I believe that my adrenals were stealing progesterone to make more cortisol - similar to what Dr. Rind writes about <a href="http://www.drrind.com/therapies/estrogen-dominance" target="_blank">here</a>. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">October/November
2011, gained 15 pounds, totaling 234 <span style="font-size: small;">pounds</span>. With each pregnancy, I lost my own weight
during pregnancy but gained significant weight post-partum. I have wondered if this was thyroid related.</span><br />

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">By the fall
and winter 2011, <span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">I was experiencing 76 separate </span><a href="http://strongmary.blogspot.com/2012/02/my-symptoms.html" target="_blank">symptoms</a><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">, including moderate-to-severe depression, <span class="text_exposed_show">flu-like aches, foggy-thinking, and chronic fatigue. </span></span> <br /><br /><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}"><span class="text_exposed_show">It took me four
